Dr. Gerald Canfield's focus for the last 20 years has been on the design and development of patient record systems. He was the primary architect for a patient record system for the Division of Gerontology that was developed in the early 1990s and is still in use at the University of Maryland Medical School. He also developed and evaluated a system for extracting data from drug companies' patient record systems into XML-based transfer files for the Office of Generic Drugs at the Food and Drug Administration. He is the author of over 60 articles in refereed journals and proceedings. Kip has been supported by grants and contracts from NIH, FDA, NLM, and the VA.
Kip received his PhD in Medical Informatics from the University Of Utah School Of Medicine in 1990. His dissertation was in the area of natural language processing of medical text and was supported by the National Library of Medicine. He also has Masters degrees in Systems and Industrial Engineering, Biostatistics, and Linguistics. He is currently an Associate Professor of Information Systems with tenure at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
